Ahpra

All medical practitioners who undertake any form of practice must have professional indemnity insurance or some alternative form of indemnity cover that complies with the Professional indemnity insurance arrangements registration standard, for all aspects of their medical practice.

Our Indemnity Insurance Policy, a benefit of MIPS Membership, meets the professional indemnity obligations for healthcare practitioners as required by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra).

MIPS is one of five medical defence organisations that is authorised to provide medical indemnity insurance in Australia.

Subject to terms and conditions, our policy provides the following cover:

  • civil liability, such as when you are sued and require legal representation to defend yourself and/or are required to pay compensation
  • legal costs of defence and representation for investigations, proceedings, and other types of disputes
  • legal costs for certain types of employment and pursuit matters.

If you are a healthcare practitioner and you acquire MIPS Membership, your membership will meet your Ahpra indemnity requirements.

As a member-owned not-for-profit organisation, every decision is made with our members in mind. We protect you and your professional reputation with comprehensive insurance cover, and offer access to resources, advice, and support 24 hours a day from medico-legal experts. If you're a MIPS member in need of assistance with an Ahpra or other enquiry, please contact us on 1800 061 113 or info@mips.com.au.

What is professional indemnity insurance?

MIPS Membership includes access to indemnity cover for acts, errors or omissions you make in providing healthcare. This means that should there be a complaint, claim, investigation, or legal action made against you, then you can notify MIPS. Once notified, MIPS may appoint legal representation. The legal defence costs and any further costs such as damages you are required to pay due to a settlement or court order are paid by MIPS, provided they fall within the scope of the policy.
