Nuclear medicine technologist

The radioactive materials used and administered by nuclear medicine technologists (NMTs) can cause biological effects that may take years to manifest. There is no set time frame in which adverse radiation induced biological effects will be noticeable. Setting an appropriate retroactive cover date for your indemnity insurance is of vital importance for practitioners in this field.

MIPS membership for NMTs provides comprehensive $20 million indemnity insurance and added benefits such as MIPS Protections.

What is your indemnity status?

Because you are 100% employer indemnified, MIPS can offer you membership on the ‘employer indemnified only' basis so that you pay a lower membership fee than if you were only doing private practice. This accounts for the fact that your employer is providing you with indemnity cover for your job.

MIPS often supports employer indemnified only members with professional disputes, complaints made about them to AHPRA, healthcare services commissioners’ matters (eg NSW HCCC), investigations by state drug and poisons services and general assistance and clinico-legal advice on issues such as informed consent, testamentary capacity, release of records etc.

Hospital and other practitioners employed in large practices (both dental and medical) can be left exposed when an employer is forced to step aside because of their primary duty of care to patients or to ensure independence when dealing with staff issues or AHPRA matters.

If you are in private practice your MIPS membership fees is tailored to your gross private billings and salary. We price the membership based on your practice over the last 3 financial years and the year ahead (4 years in total). More information about pricing.

If your practice changes and a portion of your practice becomes employer indemnified (eg 20%, working one day a week for a public hospital), then you can contact MIPS and have your classification amended which may result in a lower membership fee.

Maintaining your CPD as a specialist can be costly and hard if you are exclusively in private practice. MIPS risk education is accredited by colleges such as the RACGP and counts towards your CPD. You can attend as many workshop or webinars as you like as part of your membership at no additional cost.

If you’re doing some private and some employer indemnified (eg public) work MIPS can accommodate you. This is common for practitioners who are working a day or two in private practice a week. We price your indemnity appropriately, so you don’t pay for unnecessary cover.

When you request a quote simply tell us what percentage of your practice relates to private practice and what percentage is employer indemnified.
