Dr John Moran, WA – A MIPS dental member part of the East Timorese Dental Program shares the riches of lending a helping hand in East Timor.

He participated this year as team leader, accompanied by his daughter Samantha as a Bahasa speaking dental assistant. Samantha narrates the accompanying video.

Indemnity cover for practice outside of Australia

Cover under the MIPS Members’ Indemnity Insurance Policy can be extended to members conducting MIPS approved temporary placements outside of Australia. For example:

  • student elective placement under appropriate supervision
  • employer indemnified placement (eg employee in a hospital)
  • gratuitous aid healthcare services in a developing country
  • services when accompanying an Australian sporting and/or cultural group.

Cover is provided for placements in all countries except the US or where US law applies. To be eligible for the extension you must be in an appropriate membership category for the duration of your international placement, an additional fee may apply to members in an employer indemnified category.

Members are reminded that there is a requirement they have the appropriate recognised qualifications, training and experience for the healthcare services they provide or supervise. They must comply with the laws of the place where the healthcare services are provided or studies undertaken, including registration obligations and/or requirements. 

Members undertaking approved placements outside of Australia may then also be eligible for travel cover extension (refer to Personal Accident policy wording).
