Student and graduate practice cover

Get your career protected right from start with comprehensive indemnity cover and protection from MIPS. If you are graduating this year, you can apply ahead of commencing practice. This applies to both doctors commencing their internship and dental professionals commencing their first job.

MIPS membership is waived for graduates now and until the next 30 June after you complete your course. MIPS continues to waive fees for some practitioners thereafter too – so it’s good to join/transition now so you receive further offers from MIPS to support you in the early stages of your career.

Your existing student membership doesn’t transition automatically so even if you are a MIPS member now, update your details to advise us you’re about to start practice.

There are no hidden costs and we don’t ask for your credit card details. We’re not-for-profit and we’re here to protect you.

Choosing your practice basis

If you’re a students or recent graduate, you’ll fit into one of the following three Practice basis classifications:

  • Clinical training or study
  • New graduate
  • Recent graduate

Clinical training or study

You are a healthcare student, or you are a practitioner undertaking ‘preregistration’ activity before obtaining your Ahpra registration.

New graduate

You have completed your healthcare qualification within the current membership period. This basis includes cover for practice not indemnified by your employer.

Cover is limited for medical practitioners to practice only as allowed under their provisional registration. This basis is not eligible for the ‘Minor cosmetic extension’ or ‘Dental implants (surgical placement) extension’ endorsements.

Recent graduate

You have graduated within the last five years and have not commenced an accredited specialist or dental specialist training program.

If your basis states ‘Recent graduate – Employer indemnified only’, your membership classification excludes cover for practice that is not indemnified by your employer.

If your basis only states ‘Recent graduate’, your membership classification includes cover for practice not indemnified by your employer.

This basis is not eligible for the ‘Minor cosmetic extension’ or ‘Dental implants (surgical placement) extension’ endorsements.
