Graduating this year or in the last 5 years

Depending on when you graduated, the membership fee may be waived as part of our support for young professionals in the early stages of their career.

You can apply for the new graduate basis anytime in your final year of study or when you commence your internship. Membership for new graduates is free from when you complete your studies to the next 30 June. If you are a HMO, RMO or resident (each state has different titles for junior doctors) you are eligible for the recent medical graduate basis provided you graduated within the previous five years.

Registrar and recent graduate basis

Both the registrar and recent graduate basis can extend to non-employer indemnified (private) practice up to $100,000 gross billings within the membership period, as long as that practice is commensurate with your training, qualifications and experience with appropriate supervision arrangements in place (if applicable) and the services are covered your category (eg Medical officer, General Surgery). This is designed to protect and assist you for any private practice you undertake in addition to your training program or main job, such as surgical assisting or after-hours deputising services.

If you have commenced an accredited training program you can either apply for membership or update your membership classification with MIPS in the discipline of your program (eg Surgery, GP, Physician) and your membership basis will be 'Registrar'. See the Member Handbook practice basis section for Registrar eligibility requirements.

When am I excluded?

Cover is excluded for any of the following practice when undertaken in a non-employer indemnified (private) setting:

  • obstetric services (other than ‘shared care’ antenatal consulting)
  • bariatric surgery
  • spinal surgery
  • neurosurgery.

Neither the registrar and recent graduate basis are eligible for the ‘Minor cosmetic extension’ endorsement.

International practitioners who are undertaking a period of supervised practice prior to obtaining AHPRA recognition as a specialist may be eligible for the ‘Registrar’ basis.

It's true...

MIPS membership for recent graduates includes fully comprehensive medical indemnity insurance to $20 million that exceeds AHPRA requirements, which is the same value and standard provided to mature practitioners conducting higher risk practise. This cover applies equally to all members regardless of whether you paid a membership fee.
