Am I eligible?

Are you graduating this year or graduated in the last five years? You may be eligible for membership with recent graduate basis. Depending on when you graduated, the membership fee may be waived as part of our support for young professionals in the early stages of their career.

Already a member?

Once you commence a training program you should update your membership classification with MIPS or apply in the discipline of your program (eg Surgery) and your membership basis will be 'registrar'.

You can apply for the new medical graduate category anytime in your final year of study or when you commence your internship. Membership for new graduates is free from when you complete your studies to the next 30 June.

If you are a HMO, RMO or resident (each state has different titles for junior doctors) you are eligible for the recent medical graduate basis provided you graduated within the previous five years.

Undertaking private practice or locum work?

If you have commenced a registrar training program you may be eligible for membership with a basis of 'Registrar'. Registrar basis is suitable if you are undertaking an accredited or non-accredited registrar position. With the Registrar basis, your indemnity cover can be extended to cover this work, including locums, at no further cost in some cases. This provides cover for your additional non-employer indemnified (private) practice outside of your training program, as long as:

  • that practice does not constitute more than 50% of your hours worked per week (annualised), and
  • is commensurate with your training, qualifications and experience with appropriate supervision arrangements in place (if applicable).

See Registrar basis in the Member Handbook for details.

When am I excluded?

Cover is excluded for any of the following practice when undertaken in a non-employer indemnified (private) setting:

  • obstetric services (other than ‘shared care’ antenatal consulting)
  • bariatric surgery
  • spinal surgery
  • neurosurgery.

International practitioners who are undertaking a period of supervised practice prior to obtaining AHPRA recognition as a specialist may be eligible for the ‘Registrar’ basis.

It's true...

MIPS membership for recent graduates includes fully comprehensive medical indemnity insurance to $20 million that exceeds AHPRA requirements, which is the same value and standard provided to mature practitioners conducting higher risk practise. This cover applies equally to all members regardless of whether you paid a membership fee.
