Help! I've Been Summoned

Join us for a special collaboration between MIPS and the National Association of Practicing Psychiatrists (NAPP), where we will provide valuable insights, guidance, and practical advice to psychiatrists and mental health clinicians who find themselves called upon as non-expert witnesses in legal proceedings.

In this session, our panel of experts:

  • Discuss the emotional and psychological challenges faced by witnesses and strategies to manage them.
  • Provide clarity on legal proceedings, terminology, and the role of non-expert witnesses.
  • Share practical tips and techniques to effectively communicate medical expertise during cross-examination.
  • Discuss how the legal system values medical testimony and the significance of non-expert witnesses.
Learning Outcomes

At the end of this session, participants will be able to:
  • Discuss the practical issues in engaging and providing expert evidence in legal proceedings.
  • Identify the legislative requirements, what constitutes a person as an expert, as well as the factors that are relevant to preparing if called upon as a non-expert witness in legal proceedings.
  • Plan and implement effective strategies to minimise medico-legal risk while navigating legal process confidently.
Audience

We encourage psychiatrists and mental health clinicians who are interested in learning about the tools required to navigate the legal process, to attend this webinar.
