Your Membership Fee

Fee changes from 1 July 2026

Over recent years, the cost and complexity of medical claims have continued to rise across the industry. At MIPS, this resulted in $65 million in claims being paid in the 12 months to 31 December 2025, around 40% higher than previous years.

Membership fees are reviewed annually to ensure they remain equitable and appropriately reflect members’ practice types, risk profiles and individual circumstances.

From 1 July 2026, membership fees will more accurately reflect the level of risk and claims experience associated with each practice profile. This approach helps ensure how we allocate fees fairly across the membership while allowing MIPS to continue providing personalised support and protection for members.

If your practice details have changed, we recommend you go to MyMIPS or if you would like to discuss your membership fee call us on 1300 698 509.

How we calculate your individual membership fee

Your membership fee is individually calculated using membership details for the current and three prior Policy Periods, as stated on your Member Benefit Statement, are used to calculate your membership fee.

These include:

  • Your category and practice basis.
  • Your annual gross billings and/or salary or hours worked for practice that is not employer indemnified.
  • Your extensions of practice (e.g. Minor cosmetic services, Spinal surgery or Bariatric surgery); and
  • Your practice state/territory.

Generally, the membership fee will be higher if your category or practice basis covers practice that is considered a higher risk. An increase in billings, salary or hours for practice where you are not indemnified will likely generate a higher membership fee.

Different practice states may also generate a higher membership fee even if all other membership details remain the same. Additional factors may also impact the calculation of your MIPS membership fee including:

  • Your claims history (type, claim amount, the number of claims and the recency of those claims), and any specific factors that impact your risk, the higher the specific risk factor, the higher the membership fee. For example, claims history, depending on the type, claim amount, the number of claims and the recency of those claims, may increase your membership fee, and
  • Any additional loadings including a risk surcharge may increase your membership fee. If applicable, the risk surcharge will be applied in accordance with the Medical Indemnity Act (2002) Cth.

A minimum membership fee may apply. This means MIPS considers the minimum amount it is prepared to offer membership for and may adjust your membership fee to ensure it does not fall below this amount.

Does MIPS ‘price match’ or discount?

MIPS does not price match or offer discounts. As a not‑for‑profit organisation, we set membership fees using a risk‑based assessment to ensure members are charged a fair and appropriate fee.

Your fee reflects the contribution required to fund your member benefits and to adequately cover the level of risk arising from your current and past practice.

We recommend you go to MyMIPS or call us on 1300 698 509 to ensure your membership classification is appropriate for the practice you undertake. Any adjustments to your current or past practice details may result in an adjustment to your membership fee.
