COVID-19 – Diagnosis and pathology

On-demand webinar

MIPS and the Australian and New Zealand Affiliate of the Society to Improve Diagnosis in Medicine (ANZA-SIDM) are proud to combine their resources to present this webinar to members of ANZA- SIDM and MIPS. Hosted by MIPS, participants will hear from leading experts about some key issues in the fight against COVID-19.

Practitioners are dealing with many diagnostic dilemmas around COVID-19 as they have come to recognise its association with a wide spectrum of symptoms. Knowing the most common presenting symptoms, recognising less common presenting symptoms, and dealing with asymptomatic patients are important in preventing both overdiagnosis and underdiagnosis of COVID-19. As with all healthcare, the correct diagnosis is the best starting point.

The critical aspects around diagnosis will be discussed by Dr Ian Scott, consultant general physician and Director of Internal Medicine and Clinical Epidemiology at Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane. He is Prof of Medicine at University of Queensland, former IMSANZ president (2003-2005) and currently chairs the Queensland Statewide General Medicine Clinical Network.

Testing is one of our crucial defences against the coronavirus. Hear the most up to date information concerning COVID-19 pathology issues from Prof Dominic Dwyer – our reliance on the accuracy and efficiency of testing, what we know and what we don’t know, the difficulties around inaccuracies such as false negatives and how they are best managed. Prof Dwyer is a medical virologist and Director of NSW Health Pathology’s Public Health Pathology state-wide service. He trained in virology and infectious diseases at Westmead Hospital’s Institute of Clinical Pathology and Medical Research (ICPMR) in 1986 and became a medical microbiologist in 1997. In 2009, Prof Dwyer was appointed Director and Senior Medical Virologist for ICPMR’s Centre for Infectious Diseases and Microbiology Laboratory Services. He is currently a Clinical Professor at the University of Sydney’s Western Clinical School.
