Clinical trials

Indemnity protection for a member’s participation in clinical trials is a membership benefit subject to approval.

To obtain approval, you need to complete a Clinical Trial Notification form, which will be considered by the MIPS Membership Committee.

As a general rule any clinical trial being carried out in the public practice sector should be indemnified by the public sector institution. For members participating in non-public sector trials, MIPS assistance might be required.

You only need to complete a Clinical Trial Notification form when you have a degree of private exposure arising from participating in the clinical trial.

Should you require cover you will need to provide details of the clinical trial/s that you wish to participate in including confirmation and details of approval by a recognised ethics committee and the clinical trial design.

Senior clinicians of the Membership Committee (who meet each week) consider each notification and the background material supplied. You will be notified of the outcome immediately thereafter.

If you are having difficulty confirming arrangements with your public hospital regarding the status of your cover for trials involving public patients, then please provide a contact point to MIPS and with your consent, we will contact the hospital on your behalf.

MIPS Member Benefits do not provide cover for product liability issues or for errors resulting from failure to follow protocol.  Members may also seek assistance under MIPS Protections for non-medical indemnity matters that may arise.

How to apply

Should you require cover for participating in a clinical trial you will need to apply to MIPS by providing the following details:

  • Clinical Trial Notifcation form
  • Copy of letter from relevant Ethics Committee confirming approval for trial
  • Trial protocol
  • Patient consent form
  • Any other relevant supporting documentation should be included

Details should be emailed to info@mips.com.au.

The Membership Acceptance, Assessment and Advisory Committee will review and assess the material provided on a regular basis. You will be notified in writing of the outcome shortly thereafter.
